Military Outreach Program Updates

Thank you all for another successful year for the PMIWDC Military Outreach Program. With the support of a great group of volunteers and PMIWDC’s leadership, we have been able to continue to serve the greater Washington DC military community.

I would first like to acknowledge the support of two people that were critical to our success. Lisa Iannuzzi sponsored and led the Military Outreach Program as the PMIWDC Director for Corporate Alliances. Lisa’s tireless efforts to create a great team and establish the program were critical to getting us where we are now. In the New Year, the Military Outreach Program transitioned to fall directly under the Director of Operations, and Lisa was elected to be a PMIWDC Board Member at Large. She continues to be an awesome advocate of our program, and I thank her immensely. I would also like to thank Karla Heren for all of her work this past year. Karla led all of our scheduling, communications and marketing efforts – the critical cog that keeps our program moving. Burke Lee has volunteered to take over for Karla. I am extremely thankful for her support, and our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family as they continue to serve our great Nation overseas.

This past year, we maintained our quarterly Military Outreach Presentation Series. We have adopted a workshop format that focuses on scenarios and more interaction rather than lectures. Our topics for the past year were selected to support transitioning military as well as veterans in the community with subject areas that will help them to understand the opportunities and benefits that a project management certification can provide as well as access to project management networking. We covered topics such as Earned Value Management in Practice, Soft Skills in the Workplace, Risk Management for PMs and Projectized Business Development. Our feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we will continue to provide this service. On June 14th, we will be holding a panel discussion with several companies (large, small and a government agency) that looks to provide insights on how project management provides value at their company. We are looking forward to a great discussion and hope that it creates a lot of questions from the audience. This will be Karla’s last Military Outreach event, so please come out to wish her a safe transition as well. Tim Dalhouse from PM Prolearn, will be leading a workshop in September geared toward the new exam and Tim Grimes, one of our Military Outreach volunteers, will lead a workshop in November covering the agile certification (PMI-ACP).

Additionally, we have supported several events in the local area. Tim Dalhouse led our participation with the Top Three Association at Andrews AFB. Tim Fitzgerald led our participation in an industry panel for the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. We also participated in the MOAA job fair at the Air and Space Museum as well as the PMIWDC PM Symposium. Look for us at the next big job fair at Henderson Hall and the next PMIWDC PM Symposium. Our volunteers have aided several transitioning military members to navigate the PMP certification process. For something new for this year, we are also partnering with the PMIWDC Mentor/Protégé Program military members to leverage all of our capabilities for the community.

PMI Military Liaison

While still a relatively nascent program, the visibility that our program receives has made us a model for other PMI chapters. We were invited to facilitate a session on Military Engagement Programs at the combined region (5 and 14) PMI Leadership Institute Meeting.

We are a purely volunteer-staffed program. A huge “Thank You!” to all of our volunteers that make our program possible and the success that it is.
