    -

Stress is especially high these days! If you believe that miscommunication within your project team is a source of stress, this interactive online workshop will help.

Conflict is both common and uncomfortable. Even the most close-knit teams will encounter conflict on occasion. In some workplaces, conflicts are resolved quickly and easily; in others, it seems like disputes and arguments happen all the time - and fester, contributing to distrust and more conflict, in a vicious cycle.

There are multiple steps project managers can take to create a culture where conflicts are minimized. Just as important, there are simple tips managers can follow to handle the stress of a conflict with grace and fairness, and model curiosity to help teams build a more collaborative culture.

  • Virtual Meeting: Agile in Government: Theory, Practice, and Proof it Works

    -

Agile is trending hot in all areas of project management, and especially in government. Why? Because life in government continues to be more and more uncertain. Uncertainty doesn't fit in the predictive approach, with fragile schedules set to slip if deadlines are missed. Agile takes that uncertainty and flips the script with an anti-fragile approach where uncertainty is expected, worked into delivery, and offers a way to derive unbelievable benefits. Bombarded with stories of GSA's 18F and the Air Force's Kessel Run, the program manager is still asking the question, "yes, but how do we do this and stay compliant with the FAR, DFARs, and hold our vendors accountable?" The vendors are asking, "how can I take the risk of Agile under firm-fixed price?"

    -

Project success or failure is a fantasy when relying on project methodology key performance indicators: budget, percent complete, requirement sign-off, defect counts, story points, burndown charts, demos, retrospectives. With today’s project methodologies their measurements are not enough to determine if a project is heading in the right direction or not. There are other project indicators that are revealed to managers on a day to day basis and can be used as leading indicators to a project failure.
In this presentation you will learn the outside influences that can affect your High Performing team and how to lead them to success.

  • PMs Role in Cloud Services Acquisition

    -

    About the Program

Over the last 10 years, Federal CIOs' portfolios are gradually evolving from primarily "Owned" Technology Commodities (aka HW & SW Assets) to primarily "Leased" Service Capabilities (aka X-as-a-Service). As a result, CIOs have also evolved their IT Business model to be less Blackbox IT Management and more Cloud Service Management. However, the struggle still lies with the fact that we are still using blackbox adjustments. In this discussion, we will review the PM's role in Service Capability Acquisition and review some of the methods and unique factors that require a more agile acquisition mindset.

  • Performance: Beyond the Project

    -

    About the Program

It is NOT business as usual in Washington DC!
Our federal government leaders have concocted a transformation that promises to turn the executive branch departments and agencies into lean and efficient organizations!

    This presentation will:
--> Overview the issues at the heart of the ongoing federal government transformation
--> Present the strategic approach our federal leaders have taken to initiate a course correction
--> Suggest an approach for a tactical implementation that can start here and now and spread organically

    Performance: Beyond the Project

  • How Trust is Built and Lost in Professional Relational Relationships

    -

Trust is the currency of successful relationships - both professional and personal ones. This presentation draws from recent studies of the Neuroscience of Trust. You will learn the four dimensions of Trust and have an opportunity to rate yourself on Tercon’s Trust Index.

Additional topics include: 1) Early warning signs of untrustworthiness, 2) How people “really” make decisions about trusting others, and 3) What to do if trust has been broken by you, by a colleague, by a subordinate, and/or by a boss.

    Key Learning Objectives:
    * Understand that we are “hard-wired” to trust, therefore, sometimes our desire to trust over-rides our logic.

    * Identify and use specific behaviors associated with establishing and maintaining relationship trust.

    * Use a constructive approach to responding to apparent trust violations by others.

  • From Stress to Success: Getting to the Tipping Point in 10 Minutes

    -

    About the Presentation

If you want to strengthen teams and get better results having managers who the coach is key.

But in the past, it’s been difficult for busy managers to shift from the traditional management style of telling people what to do rather than taking on the coaching approach of asking. Why? In today’s world managers are stretched more thinly than ever before, continually finding themselves stuck with just too much on their plate. They don’t have time to add another task to their job description but need to coach someone fast and as part of the work they already do - not in addition to it.

Many government agencies are beginning to implement an Agile approach to Software Development. Does each agency, however, need to “reinvent the wheel” as they start or proceed on their Agile journey? Are there patterns or criteria that would increase your prospect for success? • Ensuring Stakeholder Satisfaction and Delivery Success in the Age of Digital Transformation

    -

Have you ever delivered a project that was on time, on budget and met all stated objectives but your business partner or client still wasn’t happy?
Have you had to lead projects that did not meet your organization’s standard for top prioritization, however, these efforts were still regarded as highly valuable and must-haves in order to “future proof” the organization?

This session will help project delivery leaders to better understand that point of critical mass when a business leader needs a key initiative to happen in order to move an operation from one operational state to the next; this insight will enable project and program managers to reach beyond the objectives documented in a project charter and really help business partners to realize their true desired state

During this session, participants will discuss:

  • Agile Strategies and Smart Portfolio Development

    -
Agile is continuing to build momentum across a variety of processes, outside of the traditional solution delivery space. New frameworks are driving agile into the portfolio management space. The question often posed is whether Agile is the right approach for these processes. Research on the subject is inconclusive. However, research on what drives successful businesses is not inconclusive – begging the question of whether Agile practices work are effective for portfolio development and management. Come to this session to understand how Agile can best be used to support effective Portfolio Management. Research on Portfolio Management best practices will be provided and lined up with current Agile approaches. Recommendations will be provided to help companies understand how to leverage Agile and non-Agile practices in their business models.

Even the best decision doesn't yield the best outcome every time. There's always an element of luck that you can't control, and there is always information that is hidden from view. So the key to long-term success is to think in bets: How sure am I? What are the possible ways things could turn out? What decision has the highest odds of success? Did I land in the unlucky 10% on the strategy that works 90% of the time? Or is my success attributable to dumb luck rather than great decision making?

  • The Power of Groups

    -
None of us are as good as all of us together. As social-relational beings, we need the positive, directed interaction with others in order to grow and produce effectively. Unfortunately, over the past 25 years, our society has pushed us into singular beings, reducing our ability to produce as a group. The goal of this discussion is to provide thoughts and opportunities to stretch ourselves and reinforce our ability to grow our groups within our families, co-workers, and clients.

  • How To Conduct Productive Meetings

    -

    About the Program

A good portion of our work week is spent in meetings that take more time and accomplish less than they could. We’ve all attended meetings we thought were a waste of time, where the person who called the meeting had no clear agenda, went off track, or droned on and on…and on. Afterward you may have wondered why there was a meeting at all. Worse, we may be the ones responsible for such meetings! This session will focus on how to facilitate productive meetings. Topics that will be discussed include:
    • Pre-meeting planning
    • How to create a solid agenda
    • How to handle the meeting productively, and
    • How to end a meeting

If you ever shudder when you either have to lead or attend "another meeting," this session is for you!

When AI is framed as a cheap prediction, its extraordinary potential becomes clear. The book follows its inescapable logic to explain how to navigate the changes on the horizon. The impact of AI will be profound, but the economic framework for understanding it is surprisingly simple.

  • Leadership in the Agile Age

    -

    About the Program

The rise of Agile is revolutionizing product development and is forcing organizations to change their view of management. Organizations are moving away from a command and control approach to management toward self-organizing, self-managing development teams. Decision making authority has moved down to where the information is, thus increasing decision speed and quality. This trend has resulted in a myth that managers aren’t needed in Agile organizations. Nothing could be farther from the truth!

The overall framework of change and recommendations will complete the discussion. It will be followed by an open interactive discussion with question and answers.

    About the Presentation

Dr. David F. Rico will give a presentation on "Lean & Agile Organizational Leadership: Establishing Vision, Guidance, & Trust to Unleash Enterprise Competitiveness," which are emerging models for managing high-risk, time-sensitive R&D-oriented new product development (NPD) projects with demanding customers and fast-changing market conditions (at the enterprise, portfolio, and program levels). It establishes the context, provide a definition, and describe the value-system for lean and agile methods, principles, and core ideas. It provides a brief history and comparative analysis of lean and agile methods, project management, and portfolio frameworks.
