Presentation will illustrate the criticality of Resilience (Incident Management, Business Continuity, and Disaster Recovery planning) and highlight the pivotal role of Risk Management to ensure all angles are covered when the time comes. A disruption to our business doesn’t necessarily equate to a natural disaster anymore. It can take many forms: equipment failure, application failure, human error, malicious software attacks, blackouts, fire, or even workplace violence. These may occur anytime, so we need to be prepared to minimize the disruption and keep personnel safe and our business competitive. Continuing our business is dependent on planning, communication, and coordination – all key functions of our Program Management Organization. Issues in these areas include (but are not limited to): safety, identification of critical assets, processes and personnel, established command structure / roles and responsibilities, managed communications and training, testing, exercising, and continual improvement. How does Verisign leverage the risk register as a tool to make decisions and REACT, RESPOND, RECOVER in case of a critical incident? The PMO has developed an integrated tool to help us assess those areas of risk and facilitate contingency plans. The goal is to facilitate an integrated approach to ensure that critical processes continue to function during and after a disaster or incident that interrupts the operation of the organization. The key message is that business disruptions (i.e., Bad Things) will happen and we need to be prepared to respond accordingly – it is going from the total chaos at the moment of disaster to flawless execution in the face of adversity.
About the Speaker
Maricarmen Suarez, PMP
- Project manager responsible for the build-out, implementation, and product migration to Verisign's tertiary data center in Europe, as well as one of Verisign's primary data centers in the East Coast. Scope included migration of 500+ servers encompassing systems, storage, backup and network infrastructure. Led requirements management, project plan development, scheduling, resource planning and issue resolution among all stakeholder groups.
- Oversaw the Business Continuity Strategic Program – Managed all projects associated with the implementation of business continuity for.com/.net suite of products. Led an external team through the completion of a Business Impact Analysis (BIA) of our services. Active member of the Corporate Incident Management team.
- Recipient of VeriSign’s 2010 CTO Leadership Excellence Award
