About the Course
Do you spend way too much time managing other people’s issues? If so, you’re not alone. Project and program managers often cite people problems within the team as an enormous time and energy drain. Miscommunications, misunderstandings, mistrust, egos, jealousy, pettiness, anger, poor listening, lack of empathy, fear, blame, shame, self-centeredness – these and other problems can fester in a team, jeopardize the work, and make everyone absolutely miserable. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
This one-day seminar focuses specifically on the emotional intelligence competencies that teams need to function at a high level and deliver successful outcomes. Participants will examine the skills that strengthen their teams’ emotional intelligence and specifically, what they can do to create and foster high-functioning teams. Through lecture, discussion, and experiential activities, participants will explore and try their hand at strategies that increase the team’s abilities to regulate emotions and communicate more effectively. By the end of the session, participants will have a foundation for developing an emotionally intelligent team and the framework for effective working relationships within the team. Participants will return to work with practical strategies for bringing non-team players back to the fold.
Specific objectives include to:
- Examine Daniel Goleman’s and other emotional intelligence frameworks
- Place emotional intelligence frameworks specifically within a project or program management context
- Explore strategies for coaching team members to increase their emotional intelligence
- Identify issues and behaviors that can be resolved by increasing emotional intelligence, and those that can’t
- Rehearse responses to scenarios to increase comfort in confronting emotional intelligence challenges
This seminar is a valuable stand-alone course, and also makes an excellent follow-up to Don’t Be a Bull in a China Shop offered in October 2010.
About the Instructors
Michael R. Van Dyke, PMP, CEO, Serengeti Enterprises
After working for 25 years as a project manager for theater, music, and dance productions, Michael R. Van Dyke, PMP, is president of Serengeti Enterprises, Inc. His company provides training, and workforce development services to business teams and individuals. He is a certified coach (NCC) through the Newfield Network and a member of the International Coach Federation (ICF). He has been on the faculty at Yale University, Dartmouth College, and Amherst College.
In addition to customized training, Mr. Van Dyke offers open enrollment seminars through the Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), including in the Project Management Certificate Program, and has presented several popular courses in the PMIWDC-NOVA educational alliance.
Mr. Van Dyke received a master’s degree from Yale University and was recognized with the Virginia Community College System Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Workforce Trainer/Instructor.
Dr. Laura Hills
Dr. Laura Hills is the president of Blue Pencil Institute, an educational organization in Fairfax, Virginia that specializes in helping seasoned professionals take their careers and their lives to the next level. Dr. Hills is the author of three successful business books and hundreds of popular journal articles on topics that include management systems, human resources, marketing, communications, leadership, and ethics. She is an educator, writer, and coach who has spent the last 30 years teaching professionals how to improve their communication, relationship, and professionalism skills.
Dr. Hills holds a Doctor of Arts in Higher Education from George Mason University where she focused her scholarly work on leadership studies. She is a distinguished scholar and was awarded the George Mason University Higher Education Outstanding Doctoral Student Award and Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award. Dr. Hills was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa as an undergraduate at Rutgers University. She has significant teaching and educational leadership experiences and is a former college professor and academic administrator. Dr. Hills has also taught a variety of popular business and self-improvement courses at Northern Virginia Community College for more than a decade.
