As large organizations undertake the exciting journey of Agile transformation, they inevitably face a certain identity crisis that makes them question everything they have known about project management and practiced for years (and decades). PMI and the PMBOK gave us a structured framework of 5 process groups and 10 knowledge areas, with all the processes within, each with clear inputs and outputs. And then Agile came along with only 4 values and 12 principles.

We are amid a major industry-wide transition toward Agile and DevOps, where seasoned Project Managers are expected to pivot and embrace a new way of delivering better software. However, most Agile training classes and books focus of the desired and ideal to-be state of Agile practice, without connecting the dots for how to get there.

This presentation will focus on the Risk Management knowledge area. It first introduces Risk and Risk Management 101 (PMBOK-style), traditional RM implementation approaches – pros and cons. It then looks under the hood for how Agile teams implicitly address Risk. And, in conclusion, it discusses the applicability of traditional Risk Management techniques in Agile environments.

Risk Management in Agile Projects

Bella Trenkova headshotBella Trenkova is an IT Management Consultant and a small business owner supporting the federal government contracting community. Bella started managing software development projects in 1998, became a PMP in 2003 and then again in 2012, and a PgMP in 2014. She has been an Agile practitioner and advocate since 2012, when she joined the first Agile pilot at a Fortune 500 financial services company. Since then, she’s been passionate about helping organizations and individuals making the crossover from the traditional waterfall SDLC to Agile and DevOps. She stands here today, because she firmly believes the PMBOK knowledge is still applicable in the Agile world, when applied through the lenses of the Agile manifesto and the 12 principles.

Bella is a mother of three (at least one of them a future project manager) and a mentor with Women in Technology and Girls in Technology. She walked the Avon 39 mile for breast cancer 6 times and she is currently training and fundraising for her 7th season.
