Planning your project schedule is simple – all you need to do is go to your desk, roll up your sleeves, fire up Microsoft® Project on your computer, and begin typing – what could be simpler – Right?? Wrong! But this is the accepted belief (and practice) by many project managers. It is also one of the contributing factors for why so many projects fail each year – in excess of 60% according to some industry surveys. In this presentation we will discuss Schedule Planning, which is different than “Project Planning” in that we will be focusing on the project schedule and developing an accurate and comprehensive schedule that you can use to manage your project. We will introduce you to some proven project planning and scheduling techniques for determining the major tasks and evaluation milestones that are required to develop a comprehensive and manageable schedule plan.

About the Speakers
Steve Edwards is the CEO of Edwards Project Solutions (EdwPS). Mr. Edwards founded EdwPS in 1997 to provide services, solutions, and training that enhance the capabilities of Government agencies, commercial firms, and non-profit organizations – ensuring their projects remain on target, on time, and on budget. EdwPS helps organizations achieve success through four distinct Corporate Solution Areas: Program & Portfolio Management, Knowledge Management, Mission Assurance, and Learning & Development.
Mr. Edwards is a technologist with an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Maryland, as well as degree certificates in electronics design and biomedical electronics technology. He has more than 30-years’ experience in engineering design, development, test, repair and manufacturing, as well as program management in the electronic hardware and missile test industries. His experience with project management, project scheduling, and earned value management systems, began in the mid ‘80s with large fixed price and cost reimbursable DoD projects. Steve is also a contributing author of project management books published by EdwPS focused on Microsoft Project, as well as published articles on engineering design and project management.
Mr. Edwards is active in many project management and engineering organizations, including the Project Management Institute (PMI), the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering International (AACEi), and the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He ensures that EdwPS also remains involved in business advancement organizations such as the local Chambers of Commerce, Technical Councils, and Business Advisory Groups. Steve is an active member of the Baltimore Area Council (BAC) of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), serving on the Executive Board for the organization. He is an Eagle Scout, class of 1974, and a passionate member of the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA). Steve is also an active participant in his church, serving on the vestry, finance boards, and several other advisory councils.
About the PM Industry Insights
PM Industry Insights is PMIWDC's workshop series that addresses the practical aspects of Project Management.
These sessions are to provide you with insights on what is going on in the local industry so you can learn from it. This discussion-based session will include presentations on tools, industry panels, interviews with industry experts, workshops, etc. The target presenters will be individuals from PMO’s, university professors, consultants, etc.
Both PM Industry Insights and the monthly dinner meeting are worth 1 Professional Development Unit (PDU) each to certified PMPs. Continued certification as a PMP requires the accumulation of these valuable credits and we are pleased to offer this opportunity to obtain both the important training and the educational credit associated with it.
