About the Course

Course Description:

In every project-centric industry, project portfolio performance has remained stubbornly poor, with project success rates persistently stuck in the 50-60% range. Regardless of a host of frameworks & methods such as the PMBOK, EVM, CMMI, Agile, and more, project failures remain far too common, suggesting that there are fundamental root causes of poor reliability that common practice has yet to address. This session will focus on a few of the key underlying drivers of project portfolio reliability, and will show how proven techniques from Critical Chain, Agile, and Lean can be integrated into a Project Portfolio Management (PPM) construct that is designed to help you achieve dramatic improvements.

Specifically, this seminar will teach nine disciplined techniques for achieving "2X" or better improvements in project portfolio performance. It focuses on three primary drivers of project portfolio performance:

  1. Maximal-impact Project Selection™—picking the highest-impact projects possible.
  2. Maximum throughput of project completions—getting as many projects done as possible, within resource constraints.
  3. Optimal portfolio reliability—delivering as many projects within plan as is optimal for the organization’s risk tolerance and resource levels.

This approach touches upon all five PMI-specified PPM knowledge areas, as de-fined in PMI’s Standard for Portfolio Management (3rd edition, December 2013).

Mike Hannan is Founder & Principal Consultant at Fortezza Consulting, which helps organizations achieve dramatic improvements in project portfolio performance. Mike brings nearly 25 years’ experience as a Consulting Executive, IT Project Portfolio and Program Manager, Process Engineer, and Software Architect. His background in Project Portfolio Management (PPM) started at NASA in the early 1990s supporting large, complex initiatives such as the International Space Station and High-Performance Computing & Communications (HPCC) programs. Since then he has managed and consulted on $500M+ project portfolios, and trained CIOs and other senior executives in Federal Civilian, Military, and Commercial environments. Mike also serves on the board of the PMI Washington DC chapter as AVP for Higher Education Partnerships, and is the lead author of the recent best-selling book, “The CIO’s Guide to Breakthrough Project Portfolio Performance.”
