About the Course
Congratulations! You have your new project management assignment. As early as the kickoff meeting, you can see signs of stress and conflict among your project team members that could delay the project’s deliverables. The project management plan does not have time scheduled for resolving conflict and the PMBOK didn’t mention a “Conflict Management Plan” per se. How are you going to manage the conflicts that arise and still meet the project schedule?
This one-day seminar focuses on the (almost) inevitable conflict that occurs during a project within the project team. By examining common causes of conflict, participants will explore strategies that help them examine and fit their organizational context, their level of experience, and their comfort with confronting conflict to their current project. The seminar content will identify levels of conflict; methods of managing and resolving conflict; and the complications that company politics and personal attitude can introduce to either side of the situation. The goal of the seminar points participants forward toward solutions and away from getting mired in the past history that brought the problems in the first place.
Through lecture, discussion, and experiential activities, participants will:
- Examine levels of conflict ranging from healthy debate to destructive sabotage
- Explore the role of organizational influences that encourage conflict or solution
- Review proactive strategies project managers can employ to minimize conflict
- Examine their personal preferences toward addressing conflict
- Create an action plan to increase their effectiveness managing conflict
About the Instructor
Michael R. Van Dyke, PMP, CEO, Serengeti EnterprisesAfter working for 25 years as a project manager for theater, music, and dance productions, Michael R. Van Dyke, PMP, is president of Serengeti Enterprises, Inc. His company provides training, and workforce development services to business teams and individuals. He is a certified coach (NCC) through the Newfield Network and a member of the International Coach Federation (ICF). He has been on the faculty at Yale University, Dartmouth College, and Amherst College.
In addition to customized training, Mr. Van Dyke offers open enrollment seminars through the Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), including in the Project Management Certificate Program, and has presented several popular courses in the PMIWDC-NOVA educational alliance.
Mr. Van Dyke received a master’s degree from Yale University and was recognized with the Virginia Community College System Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Workforce Trainer/Instructor.
