Project estimation continues to plague many organizations. Over optimistic sales forecasts, understated development costs, scope creep, and a false sense of urgency that artificially drives the due date. Driving business must focus through strategic goals and objectives, SWOT analysis, the use of ‘From – To’ analysis, and focus on the portfolio. Strong commitment by management to align new projects with five year plus initiatives help to focus resources to the priority projects. A strong estimating tools, training, and taking the upfront time to do planning all contribute to projects that bring quality products and services online within budget, on schedule, and meeting all project objectives.
