About the Course

Wouldn’t it make your job easier if everyone within your program or on your project acted like a leader – taking initiative, communicating effectively, and being accountable for their assignments? It may sound like a dream, but you can turn it into reality by developing the leadership potential of each of your team members. It starts with the nominal leader (you as the Program or Project Manager) noticing how well people use the skills – or are ready to refine the skills – of leadership. Part of your role as the leader is to encourage leadership behavior in others to build additional productivity into the time people spend at work.

In this one-day seminar, participants will identify four foundational skills that good leaders and managers need to master, learn to recognize these skills in themselves and others, and build on this foundation to increase leadership behavior at all levels of the project or program effort. The specific leadership skills include effective communication, initiative, self-awareness, empathy, and results-focus. Through lecture, discussion, and experiential activities, participants will create an action plan for themselves to assess current skill levels, set a team culture that supports leadership principles, and coach people to increase effectiveness within their role.

Specific objectives include to:

  • Define the “normal” progression from good worker to leadership role
  • Identify the skill sets associated with “management” and “leadership”
  • Explore and assess four foundational skills required of leadership
  • Examine five specific leadership behaviors
  • Identify strategies to become a leader of leaders
  • Develop an action plan to implement after the seminar

About the Instructor

Michael R. Van Dyke, PMP, CEO, Serengeti Enterprises

After working for 25 years as a project manager for theater, music, and dance productions, Michael R. Van Dyke, PMP, is president of Serengeti Enterprises, Inc. His company provides training, and workforce development services to business teams and individuals. He is a certified coach (NCC) through the Newfield Network and a member of the International Coach Federation (ICF). He has been on the faculty at Yale University, Dartmouth College, and Amherst College.

In addition to customized training, Mr. Van Dyke offers open enrollment seminars through the Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), including in the Project Management Certificate Program, and has presented several popular courses in the PMIWDC-NOVA educational alliance.

Mr. Van Dyke received a master’s degree from Yale University and was recognized with the Virginia Community College System Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Workforce Trainer/Instructor.
